Introduction

The courses are designed to enable delegates to gain an understanding of the complex area of employment law. They can be tailored to the specific needs of an organisation and to the target audience. All courses can be supported by documentation including copies of the presentations, applicable policies and procedures, case citations and references to applicable legislative provisions. The courses can be run on a once off basis or as part of an ongoing knowledge roll out programme.

Course Details  

1. Introduction to Employment Law

The course will provide delegates with an overview of the law that is applicable to the employment relationship. This will include key pieces of legislation and relevant case law to highlight the application of employment law to the employment relationship. The course will enable delegates to understand the legal environment that they operate in. Delegates will be able to identify what is required to maintain an effective and legally compliant working environment.

2. Understanding the Contract of Employment

The course will provide delegates with an introduction to the contract of employment and to the law that affects it. This will include an overview of the background and framework of legislation and legal sources in Ireland that affect the contract. The course will enable delegates to understand the obligations on the employer and employee vis-à-vis the contract of employment.

3. Managing Discipline and Grievance Procedures

The course will provide delegates with the knowledge and skills to manage and implement disciplinary and grievance procedures. On the knowledge side delegates will be provided with a practical overview of the law in the area including applicable legislation and what the case law is saying on the subject. This will enable delegates to understand best practice in the management of grievance and disciplinary procedures. Also the course will concentrate on the management of the procedures in accordance with organisational policy and practice. On the skills side there will be a focus on the management of processes, conducting grievance and disciplinary meetings and report writing.

4. Managing Investigations

The course will provide delegates with the knowledge and skills to conduct an investigation into a complaint by an employee under either a grievance procedure or in accordance with policies in relation to Bullying, Sexual Harassment or Harassment. On the knowledge side delegates will be provided with an overview of the applicable law and best practice so as they understand the context in which investigations take place. Also the course will concentrate on the management of an investigation in accordance with organisational policy and procedure. On the skills side there will be a focus on carrying out investigations, management of the process and report writing.

5. Information and Consultation Directive

The course will provide delegates with an introduction to the practical implications of this piece of pending legislation. Delegates will be able to identify how the obligations to inform and consult employees will affect the workplace. Delegates will be able to identify how to maintain a working environment that is compliant with the obligations of this pending legislation.

6. Dignity and Respect in the Workplace

The course will provide delegates with a clear understanding of how to promote and maintain dignity in the workplace i.e. a workplace free from Bullying, Sexual Harassment and Harassment. Delegates will be provided with a practical overview of the law in the area including applicable legislation and what the case law is saying on the subject. Delegates will also be guided through typical organisational policy and procedures on how to manage and promote dignity in the workplace in line with best practice standards. The course will enable participants to understand their and the organisation's responsibilities in the promotion and maintenance of a dignified workplace.

7. Diversity Management

The course will provide delegates with a clear understanding of how to manage and promote workplace behaviours that will engender diversity. Delegates will be provided with a practical overview of the law in the area including applicable legislation and what the case law is saying on the subject. Delegates will also be provided with an overview of what is needed for the implementation of effective policy, procedures and strategies to manage diversity in the workplace. The course will enable participants to understand their and the organisation's responsibilities in the promotion and maintenance of a diverse workplace.

8. Train the Designated Contact Person

The course will provide delegates with an overview applicable policy and legislative provisions that apply to the role of Designated Contact Person. Also delegates will be provided with skills to deal with the practical application of their role. There will be an emphasis on the concept of dignity in the workplace i.e. a workplace free from Bullying, Sexual Harassment and Harassment. Delegates will be equipped with the core skills and knowledge to enable them to fulfil their role as a Designated Contact Person.
